After a 30 year career serving the United States in military service, Erin’s dad, Colonel Ed Hatch, retired this week. The two of us, along with many other family members and friends met up in Virginia to celebrate his accomplishment. Erin’s parents put a considerable amount of time and thought into the retirement ceremony, a pre-ceremony dinner, and a week at the beach with family–it rivaled any well-planned wedding. It was a fabulous time of hanging out and playing as well as hearing about the significant difference one person can make in an organization the size of the United States military and the role he has played in so many individual lives. We felt very proud to have him as our Dad!

The time at the beach was a definite highlight of the week. We got to spend time with Erin’s sisters, brother-in-law, niece, cousins, aunt, grandmother, and others body boarding, hanging out on the beach, playing games, eating lots of good food, taking pictures of adorable children, and just being together.

Here are a few shots from the week:

This year for the Fourth of July a group of our friends got in their cars and headed off to Idaho.  This was a plan that had been in motion for almost a year and we were glad to be on our way there.  What was our goal? The main attraction was the Homedale Derby which has seen the likes of Jerome Kersey and Karl Malone (which totally validates its existence).  We didn’t see anyone of great fame but it didn’t take away from the experience of seeing perfectly good cars repeatedly smash into one another until rendered immobile.  While in the area we stayed with the parents of one of our friends (who graciously let 10 people take over their house), floated the Boise River on inner tubes, went to a pancake feed, visited part of Macy family, and watched the Greenleaf parade.

After two and a half days in the Boise area we went up to McCall, Idaho to camp by the lake and relax for a few days.  We did manage while we were there to hike, swim in the lake, go to a hot springs, play quite a bit of Earl Ball (or ladder ball), eat good food (including possibly the world’s largest cinnamon roll), kayak, and roast some mouth watering smores’.  Here are some pics from our trip that will hopefully fill in the gaps.  If you want to see even more click here.

We had some friends stop by last night and had a chance to capture a few shots of their daughter. What a cutie.
