525,600 minutes

If you know the song from the musical Rent, you’ll recognize the title of this post, “525,600 minutes” is a lyric from “Seasons of Love.” The song came up on my Pandora station the other day (Glee Cast station, if you must know) and the sentence, “How do you measure a year in the life?” struck me. Probably resonating with passing of our one year of being back from travel, I started thinking about it and the first thing that came to mind was PHOTOS! We have way too many photos, but we love coming to the blog and looking back over the year of travel and now a year of non-travel and seeing the highlights in full color photos.

From there I started thinking about another one year anniversary we are celebrating soon–the start of our photography business Photo Macy. It’s kind of cool that our nearly one year celebration of a photography business should align with our first photo show, starting this Friday and lasting through the end of the month. We’ll be taking part in Newberg’s First Friday ARTwalk, which happens every month. Our stuff will be at the Pitter Patter Children’s Consignment shop–a newer shop in town that’s carries gently used maternity, baby, and kid items. It’s worth checking out and definitely meets the desire (I think) of the greater community to re-use what we can!

If you’re around and want to see the photography display for yourself, First Friday runs from 5-9pm. We won’t be there the whole time, but we plan to make an appearance during the evening. Photo Macy

If you have followed our blog for any length of time, you know we are big fans of photography. So much so that upon our return from our world-wide adventuring we began the pursuit of making photography more than just a hobby. Over the past eight months we have developed Photo Macy, our photography business.

We have been itching to share the news with everyone, but it takes longer to get a business off the ground than one might think. We have received fabulous advice from a group of extremely talented area photographers who have been gracious with their knowledge and we continue to take notes from them.

Our interest in photography developed separate from one another in high school–John was one of the staff photographers for the school newspaper’s sport section and Erin got hooked while taking a darkroom photography class. Fast-forward to today… this venture has been an incredible creative outlet for both of us. It has also given us the opportunity to work together–something we were hoping for when we returned from traveling this summer. It’s been a blast so far and we are excited to share the official news with you!

On Our Minds

There have been quite a few things on our minds over the past few weeks. We are now both employed and are getting into the swing of the day-to-day rhythm that comes with a daily schedule. Of course, we’re trying to break the rhythm as we can and keep things interesting. There is never a lack of fun things to do or try or be part of around here! A few random things of particular interest…

We continue to work on building our photography portfolio in anticipation of the kick-off of an actual business. We are learning lots and have had a few more sessions to add to our experience. This weekend we realized that between August and September we have at least one photo session every week. Stay tuned for the official launch and more information!

John’s birthday was this past week and we celebrated by going to a concert at the Washington Park Zoo. What a great concert venue! A mos Lee gave a great show and we had a super relaxing time lounging on the lawn. We had a “we love Portland” moment as waves of light rain came through during the evening and no one thought twice–umbrellas, rain gear, and a-little-rain-won’t-kill-me attitudes came out in full force and everyone had a great time despite the damp weather.

Canning class! Maybe it seems odd, but Erin and our sister-in-law, Linsey, took a free pressure canning class offered by OSU Extension and came away inspired. They canned 45 pounds of peaches and are scheming to do tomatoes next.

The mighty Air Force Thunderbirds were on display at the 2009 Oregon International Airshow, held at the Hillsboro Airport. We cruised over with Pete and Linsey, who knew the primo spot to watch without paying the $20 to get into the show. The four of us joined around 100 others in a field where we saw, heard, and felt the power of those F-16 jets. They were screaming fast and so cool to watch.

On a more serious side, we are continuing to pursue our concern for women and children worldwide who are exploited by the sex trafficking industry. We are looking ahead to an advocacy training session with IJM taking place in a couple of weeks. New legislation is coming before Congress that will work toward the elimination of this devastating exploitation of the most vulnerable individuals. We also watched Taken, a Hollywood movie with Liam Neeson that delves into one aspect of the industry and in which Liam kicks some serious bootie (we highly recommend it). Dude, I wish I could kick butt like that.

More Beach, Please

We couldn’t resist sharing more photos from our beach time last week. The four day holiday was spent with family doing some of the things we do best–hanging out, eating good food, taking photographs of each other, and playing on the beach. Of course, most of the time our eyes and our cameras were focused on Oscar, our precious nephew, to whom we did not at all mind giving our attention. It was a fun and relaxing time and we look forward to the next time!

Father’s Day Photos

We recently had the privilege of doing a photo session with two of our favorite kids in the area. The photos were given to their father this past Sunday for Father’s Day so we have had to keep it a little hush-hush, but we were quite pleased with the results. This was our first step toward pursuing photography more seriously and we are excited for what’s ahead! Here are some of our favorite snaps…
